Commonwealth Secretary-General Patricia Scotland says her organization is looking for ways to help the Gambia fight the Rohingya genocide, and will stand by Bangladesh.

In an exclusive virtual interview from his office in London, he said the Commonwealth Secretariat was reviewing the possibility of forming a large team of lawyers from member states to assist the Gambia in the legal battle in the Rohingya genocide case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ). Patricia said Commonwealth member Canada has joined hands with Gambia in a legal battle at the ICJ. In this case, his office plans to assist with this initiative with existing lawyers in the Commonwealth.

He said the Commonwealth family stood by “full solidarity” with Bangladesh on this issue and would continue to assist Bangladesh in accordance with the decision taken at the 2013 meeting of Commonwealth Heads of Government. The Chief Executive of the Commonwealth highly praised the Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina for her exemplary humanitarian approach in providing shelter to the Rohingya.

The Gambia, with the help of the OIC, Canada and the Netherlands, filed the lawsuit against Myanmar at the ICJ in November last year. The ICJ said in a historic unanimous preliminary ruling on January 23 that there were good reasons to pursue the case and that Myanmar should take all possible steps to protect the Rohingya.
